What is CPM?

CPM stands for cost per mille, Latin for cost per thousand. It is the price an advertiser pays for 1,000 ad impressions. CPM is the standard way to price and compare display, video, social, connected TV and other awareness advertising, where you pay for reach rather than clicks.

CPM formula

CPM = (Total ad cost ÷ Impressions) × 1,000

Total cost = (CPM × Impressions) ÷ 1,000

Impressions = (Total cost ÷ CPM) × 1,000

Effective CPC = CPM ÷ (1,000 × CTR)

Effective CPA = Effective CPC ÷ Conversion rate

Example: a campaign costs $2,500 and delivers 400,000 impressions. CPM = $2,500 ÷ 400,000 × 1,000 = $6.25. With a 0.9% click-through rate that is 3,600 clicks, an effective CPC of about $0.69.

How to use the CPM calculator

  1. Choose what to calculate: CPM, total cost or impressions.
  2. Enter the other two values. The result updates as you type.
  3. Open “Convert to CPC and CPA” and add your click-through and conversion rates to see what a CPM really costs per click and per customer.

CPM vs CPC vs CPA

A low CPM is not automatically good. Always compare campaigns on the cost per click or per conversion that the CPM produces, which is why the calculator converts CPM to effective CPC and CPA.

How to lower your CPM

  • Improve ad relevance: platforms charge less for ads that earn engagement.
  • Broaden targeting where possible; very narrow audiences cost more to reach.
  • Refresh creative before frequency climbs and engagement drops.
  • Test placements such as Reels, Stories and the audience network.
  • Avoid peak auctions like Black Friday unless the return justifies it.

Frequently asked questions

What does CPM mean in advertising?

CPM means cost per mille, or cost per thousand impressions. It is what an advertiser pays for 1,000 views of an ad.

How do you calculate CPM?

Divide the total ad cost by the number of impressions and multiply by 1,000. $500 for 100,000 impressions is a $5 CPM.

What is a good CPM?

It depends on the platform and audience. Display ads often run $2 to $6, social platforms $5 to $15 and LinkedIn $30 or more. A good CPM is one that delivers your target cost per click or per conversion.

How do I convert CPM to CPC?

Divide CPM by 1,000 times your click-through rate. A $10 CPM with a 1% CTR is $10 ÷ 10 = $1 per click.

What is the difference between CPM and RPM?

CPM is what an advertiser pays per thousand impressions. RPM (revenue per mille) is what a publisher earns per thousand page views or impressions.

Is CPM or CPC better?

CPM suits awareness and video goals; CPC suits traffic and lead generation. Compare both on the cost per result they deliver.
